Polygons, Flexagons and Topology

Polygons, Flexagons and Topology

Four of our Year 7 mathematicians joined various students from Cornwall and Devon at Plymouth University to explore some new mathematical challenges. They worked in pairs throughout the morning identifying shapes by name, learning where those names came from, looking at angle sums, practicing their compass skills and producing regular polygons inscribed in circles.

After lunch the session became very practical and intriguing, they produced 'Mobius Loops' and then were really intrigued by the flexagons. All four students followed the instructions very carefully and produced various items including a leaflet with numbers written on and you could flip it so that the numbers change.

A wonderful day was had by all and the students particularly enjoyed playing with the mathematics which we had learnt.
