Fizz, Bang, Wallop... It Must Be Science! As Year 11 are nearing their exam, we thought that we should try something fun, memorable and new. The Science Walking Talking Mock has been created by scanning past GCSE papers and the core practicals in all the science specialisms to find common threads and missed learning opportunities. The science team then sat and discussed what three practicals would the students benefit from revisiting again. We agreed the following booster sessions would benefit Year 11 the most:
- Session 1: Classification and the effect of drugs.
- Session 2: Photosynthesis.
- Session 3: Enzyme.
- Session 1: Half life.
- Session 2: Waves.
- Session 3: Lenses.
- Session 1: Neutralisation.
- Session 2: Making salts and precipitation.
- Session 3: Rates of reaction.
As students entered the hall they were greeted by smoke, lights, music and a spotlighted stage area. Each student had a bespoke booklet that contained a stretching question for each session, taken from past Edexcel science papers and were asked to complete a starter question. After the starters were discussed, each session had a brief introduction by a teacher, followed by a demonstration of the practical displayed on the screen, an exam question and then time to discuss, mark their questions and refl ect, using green pen to annotate their answers.
Student voice strongly suggests that all three session were fun, engaging and has helped them to make important links to the practicals when revising for their forthcoming GCSE science exams. A massive well done to the science team for all their time and support in making this such a successful and memorable learning event.
