Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

Last week Miss Symons, Miss Warring and Mr Smart braved horrendous Dartmoor weather with horizontal snow and hail to practice for their South West Mountain and Moorland Leader awards. They took it in turns to lead difficult navigation challenges and all three got it right each time! Mr Smart and Miss Symons then went on to do their assessment course on Saturday, where they joined teachers and youth leaders from other schools to be tested on their navigation and environmental knowledge. Needless to say they both passed and deserve a huge congratulations for the eff ort and time they have put into getting this award. Well done to them!

Lunchtime activities continue when the weather is fi ne. At the moment we are off ering swing ball and volleyball, both of which are getting increasingly competitive! However in the rain we open up the Performance Hall to show extreme sports videos. If you show commitment and play well then you are rewarded with a sticker for your planner which entitles you to free hot chocolates in the tipi on the last week of term. We are still waiting for a break in the weather to serve up the ones for last term, but keep your eyes open for the tipi on a sunny day!

The intervention teams went into the woods for a zip line and bushcraft session. The students, after a nervy start, zoomed down the zip line a number of times each, making it to the end of the rope by their last attempts. They then had a competition to see who could build the best shelter in 30 minutes and also had a go at making hot chocolate on camping stoves. The way they went from being nervous to being confident, by helping each other and encouraging each other, was excellent.

Climbing Club was great on Tuesday at the Life Centre wall. The students decided to focus on the bouldering cave and after a fun warm up (led by Mr White playing ‘Simon Says’), they all attempted to climb the hardest things they could fi nd. Students really tried to fi nd and follow the Yellow and Green grade routes, Joe Mulkerrin even tried to have a go at the more diffi cult blue grades, getting part way up one. Hopefully it will be there again this week for another attempt!
