Sixth Form summer reading challenge

Sixth Form Summer Reading Challenge

We are encouraging our Sixth Form students to widen their reading over the summer break, with a list of twenty-six books compiled by the Times Educational Supplement. The academics involved were asked which books they would recommend to a student before leaving for university. The finished list includes a range of fiction and non-fiction, each with an underlying theme of personal development. Well-known titles include; A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf, The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and On Poetry by Glyn Maxwell.

The intention of this reading list is to help students transition to higher education, with greater ease and a better understanding of the unfamiliar world they will be moving into. Many students will be the first in their family progressing to higher education. Making time to complete further reading alongside their studies will develop the students’ self-discipline and time-management skills, as well as encouraging them to take on challenges and broaden their minds.
