World Book Day 2016

On Tuesday 2nd March, Key Stage 3 welcomed Huw Powell, author of Spacejackers to the College to celebrate World Book Day 2016. Spacejackers is a series of novels all about Jake Cutler, a boy who was abandoned on a remote planet at the age of 2,and his adventures and encounters with fierce and unfriendly space pirates. There are currently two books out and the third is being finished off as we speak.

Year 7 and Year 8 listened to inspiring and motivational talks from Huw all about reading, how he got into writing and how aspiring writers can go about getting their work noticed. Each year group helped Huw draw a picture of a brand new, unique and unusual space pirate!

Students were able to buy books at a discounted price thanks to Waterstones and have them signed by Huw himself. The turnout was fantastic and we hope to see all the students quizzing on their books in the near future!

In preparation for the event, the library ran several competitions, including a ‘create your own space pirate’ that was judged by Huw at lunchtime. The winners, Kaitlyn Francis and Jordan Plumb, both won personalised signed copies of one of Huw’s books. The amount of effort they put into their drawings was outstanding and fully deserved. Other honourable mentions for excellent drawing of space pirates go to close runners up Hayden Daly and Piper Walkling.

After the event Huw said he really enjoyed meeting the students and answering lots of their questions. The school even got a special mention on Huw’s Facebook and Twitter pages - a selection of students’ drawings even made it to his photo album online!
